Even though the purpose of the program was specifically to immerse its students in castellano (Castilian Spanish), I quickly realized that alone would not be enough to obtain the level of proficiency I desired. There are tons of  misconceptions about language immersion, and I was fortunate to figure many of them out quickly.Moving to Spain had been a goal of mine for several years, so I was not going to let these challenges stop me. Devotion, creativity, and efficiency played a huge role in my reaching a “superior” level of Spanish in a few months. Without that clear, fervent dedication to achieving my dream, living in the country wouldnt have necessarily given me a huge advantage.Location Does Not Equal ImmersionAmong native English speakers at least, the belief th at you will automatically learn a foreign language by simply living abroad is pretty strong. We have all heard that living in a foreign country is the key to learning a language. However, since  relatively few of us are multilingual, we typically do not know much more than that.  Many people believe that living in a foreign country is the key to fluency, just because you live in said country. As if there’s something in the water.Here in Spain, its common for expats to arrive with next to no knowledge of Spanish. Many think that living among the natives and drinking enough  cañas  will be enough to pick up the language in a few months, a year tops! Sadly, its not uncommon for months to pass before they realize that they still dont speak much Spanish. Some of these people  decide to enroll in a class, others think  they just dont have what it takes and give up. They wonder where they went wrong, shouldnt they be fluent by now? The answer isno, not necessarily.One of the biggest mis conceptions about language immersion is believing that your location determines the amount of immersion you can receive. When you move abroad, it’s easy for your language goals to take a backseat to the hustle and bustle of daily life. This is also one of the many reasons why people who focus on a solely academic approach usually  don’t improve very quickly.Someone can study a language for years and not know anything because they have never had to actually use it! When you practice with real people in real situations, youre using language the way it was meant to be usedâ€"as a tool to experience the world. You can make this happen on your home turf, just as its done  overseas.3. You Can Make Friends as a LocalWhen people  relocate abroad, making friends can be a bit complicated at times. In many countries, its common for the locals to have had the same set of friends for most of their lives. They may be hesitant to expand their circle, particularly to someone who does not plan on living there long-term. It can also be easier to befriend other foreigners, especially when dealing with a language barrier and culture shock. Although the re is nothing wrong whatsoever with making friends with other foreigners, it can be hard to break out of that bubble and try to meet the locals.But back home, you have a pretty set routine. You can search for speakers of your target language who live nearby and arrange to hang out at ease. If these people are foreigners in your country, theyll probably be happy to meet you and to make a new friend. In such cases, befriending foreigners can be a mutually beneficial experience apart from the friendship itself. You can benefit from their foreign language and culture, and they have a local presence looking out for them in a foreign land.Dont Be a StrangerIt can be difficult to make friends with people who share the same culture, city and native language as you. Understandably, challenges can definitely arise when you combine a possible language barrier with cultural differences. Find out the ideas in this guest post by professional  voice teacher  Molly R... The obvious thing to do when you want  to get better at singing is, of course, to sign up for voice lessons! You may have even found that teacher right here on TakeLessons.com. But singing is so much more than what goes on with your vocal cords. We also have to exude confidence and connect with our audience. We can’t always get the help we need to become dynamic performers from voice lessons alone. Here are some suggestions for  other classes that will  take you from a good singer to an unforgettable one! Dance  Lessons No one’s looking for you to become the next Fred Astaire, but it’s essential that you move well if you plan on singing on any stage. Any  type of dance lesson  will do: ballet, salsa, ballroom, and more. When the body’s more relaxed and agile, not only do you look more polished, your voice will be a lot more free. Gone are the days of “park and bark,” where you just stand there and open your mouth. To use your space effectively, you have to be comfortable with your body. Fear not, non-dancers: There are plenty  of lessons  out there that cater to beginners. I plan on taking a swing dance workshop this summer, and I am encouraging all my students to join me! Tai Chi and Qigong This is super simple, yet so very beneficial. Master the eight brocades in Qigong, and you have a marvelous way to connect with both body and  breath! Tai Chi and Qigong lessons help us conquer nerves, get better sleep, and move with more grace. Yes, many of us have heard how yoga does all these things, too, but many people would prefer something easier and gentler. Plus, Tai Chi and Qigong are perfect  for kids and senior singers! In addition to your private lessons, I recommend following Jesse Tsao on YouTube for tips  and inspiration. Acting  Lessons A great  voice becomes a spectacular  voice when the audience believes you know  what you’re singing about. One of the best ways to develop  your performance skills  is to take acting lessons. Even if youre new to acting, beginner acting lessons  abound.  You can even find teachers through TakeLessons (I happen to teach beginning acting, too!). Remember, each song you sing is a monologue set to music. Finding ways to express it dramatically, as well as musically, will set you apart from other  singers  who are  only focused on sounding good! To help you get better at singing, an acting coach will challenge you to create a character for each song, thus making each of your performances more meaningful to both you and your audience. To supplement your lessons, I also recommend reading the book “What Do I Do With My Hands?” by Rhonda Carlson, who has coached many Broadway performers. Improv  Lessons This one changed everything for me! These days, improvisational comedy workshops are offered everywhere, including at corporate events and schools to make employees and students feel more confident. Plus,  it’s plain fun! Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for any sort of performer. By taking improv lessons, you’ll strengthen your creativity by learning how to  think on your feet and to trust your instincts. You’ll also learn how to “play well with others meaning your fellow performers  and the audience. And did I mention just how much fun it is? Go for it! After performing in any improv situation, recitals, musicals, and  open mics will seem so much easier! So, what are you waiting for? It’s quick to make, quick to eat, and great with a side of fries or salad. The Croque monsieur as it is today originated in Parisian bistros but the toasted sandwiches that inspired it didn't. (Source: MMWoolly)But is the Croque monsieur even French?The answer isn’t that simple.Certain historians trace the Croque monsieur to Australian aboriginals. It’s travelled a long way. Of course, it changed a bit on its journey.These Australian nomads would wrap their meat in two slices of dough and cook it over a wood fire. This recipe made its way further afield with roots in Indonesia.You’re probably wondering how this came to be the Croque monsieur we know today.It wasn’t until the 20th century that the Croque monsieur would appear in France. In 1910, a Parisian café on the Boulevard des Capucines starting offering the Croque monsieur; slices of with melted cheese and slices of ham.It was an instant success and started popping up all over the city. More and more cafés and bistros began offering them to Parisians and tourists.  However, it wasn’t called a “Croque Monsieur” yet.Outside of Paris, a “Croque” referred to toast that was made by soaking the bread in eggs. Funnily enough, this is basically what we call “French toast” in the UK. The word made its way into the city.Historian René Girard gives another explanation:In his 1947 book “Histoire des mots de la cuisine française” (History of Words in French Cuisine), he mentions the bistro “Le Bel Age”. The chef Michel Lunarca had to replace the bread due to a shortage in the city. He chose to use sliced bread rather a traditional baguette. When the customer asked which meat he had used, he replied: “du monsieur” (implying the meat was human) as a joke. I guess you had to be there...Nevertheless, the legend lived on and the whole world became enamoured with Croque monsieurs.Louis Leprince-Ringuet defined the Croque monsieur in 1966 as:Ham between two slices of bread covered in cheese which is baked in the oven.Now there are several different types of Croq ue monsieur. In Paris, it’s served with bechamel sauce. However, the recipe can also call for fruit, vegetables, etc.There are related dishes all over the world, too. In the US, there’s the grilled cheese, the cheese toasty in the UK, welsh rarebit, and in France, the fast-food chain Quick serves their Quick’N Toast.The most famous variant, however, is probably the “Croque Madame”. Like with toasted sandwiches, there's almost no limit to what you can do with your Croque monsieurs. (Source: Dustytoes)Here’s the recipe for a traditional Croque monsieur.Ingredients for 4 people:8 slices of bread50g of softened butter4 slices of ham8 slices of cheese100g of grated gruyere cheese4 tablespoons of milkA pinch of nutmegSalt and pepperButter the bread on one side only. Add a slice of cheese.  Before buttering the slices of bread, you can always toast them.Add a slice of ham to four of the slices. If the ham’s too big, you can always fold it in half.  Place the other slices on top.Mix the grated cheese, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a small pot. Place the mix on top of your sandwiches.Now place your Croque monsieurs onto a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes.If you prefer Croque monsieurs with bechamel sauce, you just need to place the bechamel on the lower slice and top of the sandwich before sprinkling the grated gruyère on top.After something more substantial ?Learn how to make a quiche.Different Types of Croque MonsieurWho said there was only one way to make a Croque monsieur?Each year, more and more variations are popping up. Heat your frying pan while the Croque monsieur is in the oven so that the two will be ready at the same time.Hawaiian ToastHawaiian toast is great for anyone who enjoys a sweet-savoury mix. This is even easier to make than a Croque monsieur. Take four slices of bread and take place a slice of cheese and a slice of pineapple on each one... that’s it!I’d recommend using gouda for the cheese as it goes together really well with pineapple. You can also add honey and walnuts if you want. If you love sweet and savoury combinations, try toast with blueberries and goat’s cheese.The ForestierThere’s a Croque monsieur for all the seasons. Instead of ham, you can add mushrooms and onions. This is great in autumn.The VegetarianThere are even Croque monsieu rs for vegetarians. You can use ingredients such as avocado, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and basil. However, if your ingredients don’t have a strong taste, you might want to avoid brown bread and opt for white bread.When it comes to cheese, you should opt for cheeses like gouda. Some cheeses respond well to pepper, too. If you want something stronger, opt for Roquefort.As for a side dish, go for a salad with a nice vinaigrette.
